Union Station gets a major makeover, 133 years after trains first ran
The center section of Denver Union Station was destroyed by fire. That was in 1894. The waiting room was torn down; several years later it would be rebuilt in a neoclassical style. That was in 1914. Plan Metro Denver and the Burlington Northern Railroad each drew up plans to turn the station into a multimodal facility, with trains to the airport, Boulder, local buses and a Front Range Metroliner. That was in the 1970s. And now the venerable transportation queen is to become a hotel, bus station, light-rail station, entertainment center, home to Amtrak intercity trains and a line to Denver International Airport.
